A. CAN I GET SOME HELP?
Maybe. We hope we can
There is first though one important thing. You have to be living in Wayne or Oakland County in southeastern Michigan.
Second thing. The specific IRS requirements for
the Foundation state:
Here to Help can assist temporarily
impoverished individuals who are facing an unexpected emergency and thereby
lack the basic necessities of life.
Okay. Sounds pretty legalese.
What it really means is we can help those who
are experiencing a sudden emergency and simply don't have enough money at the
present time to pay for their emergency need.
Of course we wish we could help everyone in
need. Who wouldn’t? There are though specific IRS rules for us to follow to directly provide assistance to individuals.
So we have to all we can do to make sure you
qualify for our help.
B. DO I QUALIFY? WHAT ARE THE GENERAL
1. There must be a specific reason
why your emergency arose and why, if we can help you, this situation won’t
happen again in the future. And, again, you must be living in
Wayne or Oakland County in Michigan.
2. So we can't be a temporary
solution. We can't be a Band-Aid to your problem, since that might peel off and
the emergency need will return.
3. We'll need to establish you
are currently without enough income to pay for your emergency need.
4. We have to be certain, if we are able
to help, that you'll then be able to pay all your bills moving forward.
5. Your emergency situation must have
occurred through no fault of your own. In other words, you can't be the cause
of the problem. Things that you had no control must be the cause of the
6. We can only help individuals
relying as little as possible on governmental and charitable help. Every
situation is different, so we'll look at your entire picture.
7. WE ARE A ONE TIME RESOURCE, SO WE CAN ONLY HELP ONCE AND WITH ONE SPECIFIC EMERGENCY NEED.
8. Last one. If you are unable to work due
to a disability, we will require documentation of the disability by your
receiving SSI or SSD. So please don't apply if you will not currently be
able to produce that information.
C. I THINK I MAY QUALIFY. ARE THERE
THINGS YOU ARE UNABLE TO ASSIST WITH?
There are some things we can't help you
with. It's a pretty short list though and is as follows:
1. Education Related Expenses
(Tuition/Student Loans/Books etc.)
2. Property Tax Bills
3. Funeral Expenses
4. Medical or Dental Bills
5. Driver Responsibility Fees, Legal
Fees, Traffic Tickets,
6. Clothing (other than assisting
with a work required uniform)
7. Car Insurance
9. Last one and we kept the list
under 10 things!
Home repairs or improvements (including
On a few unique occasions, we have helped by
partnering with other agencies that are also assisting this type of repair but
our maximum contribution would be $500.00. Quite honestly though we don’t do a
lot of home repairs.
